Rose Eileen Liesland

It has been a busy 48 hours. On Sunday morning at 10 Susan started having some light contractions, accompanied by a very strong muscle pain in her uterus. She was in bed most of the day Sunday. The contractions subsided, but the muscle pains did not.

Monday brought more contractions, and the muscle pain had weakened dramatically. Susan spent most of the day in bed, trying to get some rest, but being jolted back into alertness every 10 or 20 minutes by very strong contractions. She made it downstairs for dinner, but did not eat a thing and was up to bed about as soon as dinner was over. I got the kids to bed at 9, hoping and knowing that we were in for a long night.

The contractions intensified and by 11 or 11:30 we were fairly confident that this was the real deal. The contractions continued, intense, but never incredibly close together. By 1:00am Susan was in the birth tub and by 1:15 she thought it was time to call the midwives. I was not so sure it was time, but over the years I have learned that Susan is a very wise woman.

The midwives arrived around 1:35 and things continued as before. I didn’t feel like things were getting too intense and, in fact, I thought that opposite – that the tub was slowing down the contractions.

At 2:34, according to the midwives’ notes, all of a sudden Susan’s birth noises changed – from the groan of a contraction to the grunt of a push. Every labor is different, but for Susan these noises are very clear. I was surprised at how quickly things turned and before I knew it the midwives were standing over us with the rubber gloves on, ready for their part.

5 minutes later we got to meet Rose Eileen Liesland! This is always an amazing experience. Once Rose was in Susan’s arms, Susan asked if I would wake up the other kids. I woke up Andrew, Mari, and Elliot and let them know it was time to come meet the baby.

Officially born at 2:39 am, Rose Eileen Liesland, born at home, weighed in at 9lbs 0oz and was 21 inches long.

11 Year Anniversary

Yesterday Susan and I celebrated 11 years of marriage! It has hard to believe that it has been that long. The past 11 years really have gone by in a blur.

We got out for a nice date last weekend, so for our anniversary date we went out for dinner with the kids, bought a new bathroom faucet, and then headed to Over the Top, our favorite ice cream shop. Using a fake promotion I put together (which also caused much confusion in the shop) they served us the Liesland Special, with 11 scoops of ice cream in one dish.

Jasper Winery

This evening we hit the Jasper Winery Summer Concert Series, with the Reagens (of course). The kids had a blast dancing up front!

Susan at 40.3 Weeks

This afternoon we had our regularly scheduled midwife appointment. Most of the preparation is behind us now and Susan is in good shape, so the appointments are pretty quick. We usually go through some basic stuff, check on how Susan is feeling, look at some vitals, and then head home.

Baby Pool

One of the items that we discussed at our family meeting tonight is a baby pool for some of the details of #5. The winner, determined by #5, Susan, and I, gets their own Over the Top the first time we go after the baby is born.

Lucia is a Monkey

I took this picture for something else, but when I came across it I decided I had to remember this period in Lucia’s life. She loves to swing like a monkey. She climbs all over our playset and playhouse and loves to climb up and sit on one of the railings on our deck. I try to stop her, but she just insists. One of her favorite things to go is swing from the ‘grab handle’ – I had to look it up –  in our minivan. She insists on swinging every time she gets in and out of the car. It is cute, and impressive, but it makes getting in and out of the car a pain.

Fun Day!

The weather has been beautiful lately and we have been enjoying some nice days. Thursday tends to be one of our busier days, and yesterday was no exception. By the time Bean Sprouts started at 8:30 the kids were off to their homeschool enrichment classes. Mimi picks takes them and Papa picks them up and they all go to lunch.

They arrived home as we were still eating lunch with the Thursday Aftercare crew. Madeline, Stella, Veda, and Evy all stay after school on Thursday to play. This certainly makes Thursday afternoons lively and Lucia loves having the around.

When Evy got picked up at 4:45 the kids and I loaded up the bikes and rode to Neighborhood Sports. It is an 8 mile ride, mostly on trails, and it takes about an hour. This was our first time and it was nice. With just a few street crossings, most of the way was easy passage.

Neighborhood Sports is always fun when the weather is nice. This evening we played soccer. There were about 24 kids there and most were ready to have a good time.

After Neighborhood Sports it was time to make up for our missed dinner, so we headed to Snookies for some soft-serve. The Reagens joined us for our first visit of the year.

Easter 2015

We had a nice, relaxing Easter this year. The Reagens were out of town and we attended Easter Vigil Mass last night, so most of our day was spent enjoying time outdoors.

Even with the late night last night the kids were up early this morning, ready to look for their Easter baskets. It took a minute, but they all found them. After that we looked for Easter eggs in the back yard before getting out for a walk and just enjoying the nice weather.

In the afternoon we were headed out for a bike ride and Rick and Donna, our neighbors, just happened to be getting ready for a ride at the same time. We invited them to ride along with us.

For dinner Mimi and Papa came over and we had the traditional fare, followed by a terrific chocolate cake.

Good Friday Passion

Last night was the Good Friday Passion reading at our church. It is done in the “readers theatre” style and this is the third year I have been the director. The players have to memorize their lines, other than the narrator. The older kids enjoy being involved in the practices and preparation and it is only a matter of time before they are wearing the black and red.

Baby Preparations

With just about 2 months to go, we are starting to get serious about getting ready for the baby. In March that meant updating our bedroom, where the baby will be born and where we tend to spend a lot of time in the first few weeks.

We repainted, lowered the bed, made room for the birth tub, and redecorated. Other than some work in the basement, to get ready for school, this is the first work we have done in any of the rooms since we have moved in.
